MRCP revision battle 22.5: Fanconi Syndrome

Fanconi syndrome is disturbance of proximal renal tubule function, resulting in defective reabsorption of:
  • amino acids
  • phosphate
  • potassium
  • glucose
  • bicarbonate

It can cause vitamin D resistant rickets.

Causes of Fanconi syndrome include:
  • idiopathic
  • inherited
    • cystinosis
    • Wilson's disease
  • acquired
    • heavy metal poisoning
    • light chains
      • amyloid
      • myloma

Treatment is:
  • treat cause
  • replace losses (potassium, bicarb, phosphate, vit D supplements)
